The Fellowship Award process

How to nominate

Candidates for Fellowship must have been a Full Member of the Society for at least the past five years, and be a current Qualified Professional Researcher (QPR).

New Fellows are elected by a process of nomination by Society members and decided by vote by the Fellowship Committee and existing Fellows.

Nominators are required to present the information about their chosen candidate, accompanied by a covering letter, the nomination and the Election of Fellows 2020 declaration forms. The submission should be as concise and complete as possible, addressing the criteria.

  1. A nominator who is a member of the Society and preferably a seconder who is also a member.
  2. All mandatory criteria need to be met and checked off.
  3. As nominator, outline how you feel the candidate has met the criteria of the advancing the principles and practice of research. This can include techniques, research solutions or industry issues.
  4. As nominator, outline how you feel the candidate has enhanced awareness and understanding of research.
  5. As nominator, outline how you feel the candidate has enhanced the awareness amongst the public, stakeholders and other groups of the value and ethical practice of research. Impact on research participants, potential clients, the public and government at all levels should be considered.
  6. As nominator, outline how you feel the candidate has made a substantial contribution to management decision making, original thought and conceptual structures in marketing, policy formation or research either at an organisation level or within the profession as a whole. This may include the leadership of business organisations or research units engaged in research, insights and analytics.
  7. Detail any long term and significant contribution made by the candidates to the Research Society such as:
    – Research Society Board membership
    – Research Society Board Sub Committee membership
    – Divisional Committee membership
    – Conference Committee membership
    – Similar participation in other organisations that are clearly research related may be considered.

Election of fellows criteria

Fellows of the Society are persons who have professional standing and recognised accomplishment in the fields of research, insights and analytics or related activities. A candidate’s contribution should have benefited the profession as a whole; through exposure of ideas and techniques in the public domain; through expansion of the profession into new areas or methodologies; and/or through a contribution to the cohesiveness and perceived importance of the profession. A candidate must meet the mandatory requirements and show sufficient accomplishment under the general criteria.

Mandatory requirements

  1. Candidates for Fellowship must have been a FULL Member of the Society for at least the past five (5) years and be a current Qualified Professional Researcher (QPR).
  2. A person cannot be considered to be a Fellow if they have received a reprimand or other sanction as a result of a breach of the Code of Professional Behaviour within 10 years of nomination or are in the process of resolution of a possible breach.
  3. The candidate cannot be a serving member of The Research Society Board but may be a member of a State Committee.
  4. The candidate must indicate their willingness to make an ongoing contribution to the Society if called upon to do so.

General criteria

Nominators should explain the candidate’s contribution under the following categories.

Please note: Each category has a possible 50 points, and in finally confirming a person as a Fellow, current Fellows will be looking for candidates with over 100 points for election.

  1. Advancement of the Principles and Practice of Research (50 Points)Contributing to theory and practice underlying research, insights and analytics via published books, refereed papers, conference papers, seminars and workshops. Development and promotion of new or advanced techniques or methodologies. Contributing to the professional development (PD) of researchers, including participation in Research Society and other organisations’ PD activities.
  2. AEnhancing Awareness and Understanding of Research (50 Points)Enhancing the awareness of the public, and other groups of the value and ethical practice of research, insights and analytics. Impact on both potential research participants, potential clients, the public and government at all levels should be considered.
  3. Development of Market Research in the Corporate or Public Sector (50 Points)Having made a substantial contribution to management decision-making, original thought, conceptual structures in marketing, policy formation or research either at the level of the organisation or within the profession as a whole. This may include the leadership of business organisations, or research units, engaged in research, insights or analytics. Demonstrated lifelong adherence to The Research Society Code of Professional Behaviour.
  4. Service to the Profession (50 points)Making a significant and long-term contribution to The Research Society via participation in committees at state or national level; organisation of the annual or other conferences, or service on the Board. Similar participation in other organisations that is clearly research-related may also be considered. A retiring President of the Society shall automatically become a Fellow, subject to the other mandatory requirements above.

Nomination process

Each nomination requires a proposer and a seconder, both of whom should be Full members of the Society. The nomination should address the mandatory requirements and general criteria set out above. It is preferable that the pre-prepared forms attached to this document are used to submit nominations.

In the first instance the nomination will be considered by a sub-committee of the Board, who may approach the candidate for further information and confirm their willingness to accept Fellowship.

Nominations should contain sufficient information to demonstrate to the sub-committee that there is an a priori case for the candidate to become a Fellow.

Nominations should be marked confidential and sent to The Research Society office.

The nomination for consideration for Fellowship is not an application-based process, and no correspondence will be entered into with those whose nominations have been unsuccessful.

Election process

The final vote on a candidate’s suitability for Fellowship will be taken by the current Fellows of the Society. They will be provided with:

  • details on each Candidate nominated for Fellowship addressing the criteria set out above
  • information summarising the voting criteria, and
  • a voting paper to indicate whether they believe that the nominee has achieved the required 100 points, based on the criteria set out above.

Announcement of Fellows

The announcement of awarded Fellowships will be made at The Research Society Awards evening which will be held on 25 November 2020. Details will also be published in the November 2020-January 2021 edition of Research News.
